BREAKING: UPDATED 5:44 p.m. - Robert Burke named Mount St. Mary's head coach

Robert Burke, the most recently former American assisant, also formerly a Georgetown assistant, has been named head coach of the Mount St. Mary's men's basketball team. There is a team meeting at 3:30 p.m., presumably with coach Burke. Details to follow later today.

---
5:44 p.m.

First and foremost, you heard it here first. Before the school, any blog or sports Web site announced it.

Assistant coach Brion Dunlap, not Burke, met with the players in the locker room at 3:30 p.m. At approximately 5 p.m., Burke met the players for the first time. He informed them that he is hoping to keep Dunlap as his first assistant, but that is highly unlikely as Dunlap will probably reunite with Milan Brown at Holy Cross. Here is the MountAthletics.com release.

Wow looks like you weren't even close with your inside info. Let me guess, your source has to be some student aid or intern.

BC you're an even bigger tool than BG is. I love it, "All it takes is someone that doesn't know basketball to send all that hard work back to 2001." Did you even bother to read Coach Burke's bio? 21 years coaching experience at schools such as UMBC, Princeton and Georgetown. I think we're in good hands.

As one who knows, the Mount is not interested from hiring from within, regardless of what they tell everyone. Good luck to Coach Burke, the Mount is an interesting place!

Excellent choice, made by caring and intelligent, experienced people. Mount is lucky to get someone of this caliber.

I could not disagree more with your "blame" comment re: Tom Powell. A good university president gets involved and stays involved, and it is important he does so with the sports teams.

As rabid a Mount fan as I have been (for over 50 years), I have seen small universities run amok when the coach runs the show without appropriate guidelines - Binghamton, Cleveland State, I could go on and on. (It's even worse with big schools).

Contrast that with Hofstra's actions this week - coach hired, gets drunk and drives, gets fired. That's the way to run a school. You do not do that unless there is a strong administration.

You are hurting because your friend did not get the job. Your pain is felt and I am sorry, but I have to disagree with some of the opinions you have stated.

Now we can all look to see if Brion joins Milan; who coach Burke's assistants will be; which of the recruits stay and who the new leader finds to bring on for next year and in the future.

It is an exciting time at MSM. Join in the good spirit.

Icepack, thanks for the post.
I'm very excited to see what Burke can do for the program and the players seemed optimistic after meeting with him, more so than before they met him. I am upset that Brion Dunlap was not the choice, but as I said in my previous post, I'll support Burke as much as I would have Brion. I will keep an optimistic point of view until proven otherwise. I do trust that the school made a well-informed decision, I am just perturbed that it took so long. Check back for another update.

Anon @ 5:02PM - "the Mount is not interested in hiring from within" - Sorry, bud. Wrong. Remember a guy named Milan Brown?

Sometimes there is no Milan from within.

You're actually bragging because you posted this first? It's the first thing you got right since this whole ordeal started. Where did you get Chris Harney from? Martin Inglesby a top candidate? It almost seems as if your friends were intent on having you look foolish.

Jeez guys give the guy a break. No one else has any info about the mount so atleast him and raff put some stuff together and tried to figure it out. None of the other news outlets wrote anything so atleast they tried. I appreciate the time and effort and have enjoyed reading about the process. I like the Burke hire he would have been one of my top choices also. I hope he leaves that princeton offense at home haha. Hopefully he can recruit and keep the commits we have. Id like to see Robinson stay on the staff and I think he will.

Brad did a real nice job yesterday....

The Harney name kept coming up...and Ingelsby was definitely a factor until the beginning of this week at least.

Forgive me, but remember the situation -- the Mount did not hire Milan Brown from within. He had left the Mount in the late 1990's and then was "hand-picked" to return and succeed Coach Phelan. To have correctly hired from within, the Mount should have given the position to the long-standing assistant that they had used as a scapegoat and released previous to this dubious hire.

I hope anyone and everyone who has the opportunity to meet or talk about Chris Harney also considers that he has an arrest warrant out for him in his former home in Bangkok Thailand for fraud. Be careful, he may be an excellent golfer but try and find out what precisely he does for a living- he runs elaborate scams parting people with their money and does so by approaching wealthy people on golf courses. How curious are you now? Google Christopher Paul Harney to find out more!
